Yesterday as a member of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, I joined in the screening exercise of the President of the Supreme Court Justices including the Honorable Justice M. A. Adumein, JCA, a Bayelsan representing the South South and as usual I expressed my support for his nomination and appointment and at today’s plenary session I congratulated all the nominees and advised the President, NJC and all authorities not to allow vacancies to exist for too long before filling them as has happened in this case.
Every part of the country deserves to be represented especially at the higher courts to give confidence to everyone. I also stated our determination in the Judiciary Committee to embark on comprehensive justice sector reforms and police and criminal justice reforms, issues that the Senate President has stated that he supports. I also joined the call for better funding of the Judiciary. I believe these are matters that will occupy our time when we resume next year by God’s grace.
Meanwhile I congratulate my Lord Justice Adumein and all other judical nominees and ask everyone to pray for their success.
On behalf of my constituents, the Senate caucus from Bayelsa, I thank the President for his elevation. Justice Adumein will be following the footsteps of his illustrious forebears of Bayelsa and Ijaw nation – Justice Karibi-Whyte, Justice Niki Tobi, Justice S. S. Alagoa and recently Justice F. F. Tabai, all retired Justices of the Supreme Court from Ijaw nation.
I have no doubts that Justice Adumein will continue to discharge himself credibly and I urge all our people in Bayelsa and the entire Ijaw nation to support him with their prayers now and throughout his years on the Supreme Court bench
HSD.
